Ooli Mos es artista a la par que diseñadora gráfica y desde hoy la creadora del PATTERN OF THE MONTH de la plataforma online de lamono (Web, Twitter y Tumblr). Con una marcada influencia norteña en sus creaciones, asegura mantener una relación estrecha con la naturaleza, ambiente que le transmite seguridad y sosiego. Afirma que se trata de la mejor manera para conectar con la magia de la tierra, los animales, la gente y todo lo que ocurre a su alrededor. Forma parte de Orka Collective, un proyecto que dirige junto a su amigo Abo, ambos con las mismas inquietudes y maneras de pensar.
Háblanos sobre el Pattern of the Month que has diseñado para lamono. ¿Cuál es su nombre?
Lo llamo Windfalls. En él encuentras cosas que cualquiera puede hallar en el bosque.
¿Qué te inspiró para diseñarlo?
Siempre me inspiro en la naturaleza y este pattern no es una excepción. Gira entorno a la magia de los objetos simples, que se revela a través de los ojos del que los contempla.
Formas parte de Orka Collective. ¿Nos puedes dar unas pinceladas sobre el colectivo?
Empezamos a trabajar juntos como Orka Collective en el 2010. Nos conocimos por Internet (vivimos en diferentes países). A ambos nos apasiona el arte y por ello decidimos iniciar este proyecto arístico colaborativo. Ese fue el prinicipio de nuestro trabajo juntos. Ahora nos dedicamos al diseño gráfico, téxtil y web, ilustraciones y street art. Además, también participamos en diferentes proyectos artísticos.
¿Cómo definirías tu estilo? ¿Tienes algún fetiche o signo que siempre aparezca en tus creaciones?
Me encanta el detallismo y el minimalismo de las formas sencillas, por esta razón intento probar diferentes estilos y técnicas -desde el dibujo lineal o la pintura acrílica hasta el grafismo vectorial-. Casi cada trabajo tiene una conexión con la naturaleza y el misterio. Animales, cristales y musgo, estos temas son los que uso a menudo en mis trabajos.
¿Cómo San Petersburgo y la cultura rusa han influenciado en tus proyectos artísticos?
Supongo que la naturaleza norteña y marina de mi ciudad me ha influido en su mayoría. San Petersburgo se sitúa cerca del Golfo de Finlandia y está rodeado por bosques de pinos. Creo que esa es la razón por la que amo tanto la naturaleza del norte.
¿Qué opinas del panorama street art de Rusia?
Desafortunadamente es más bien pobre. Hay algunos chicos con mucho talento y supongo que nuestro panorama artístico callejero está creciendo… Bueno, eso espero. Pero nuestro arte urbano tiene un nivel inferior al, digamos, europeo. Supongo que la razón es la dificultad de conseguir permisos para desarrollar un street art de forma legal en Rusia. Cuando el arte es “ilegal” a menudo significa menor calidad, algo lógico si tienes que trabajar tan rápido como puedas…
Estás especializada en diseño gráfico y web, ilustración y branding. En el mundo artístico actual, ¿cuál crees que es la relación entre el diseño y la ilustración?
Las conexiones entre cualquier disciplina gráfica son muy fuertes. Yo estoy interesada en el arte y el diseño. Hay una expresión: “Un artista no puede ser un diseñador. Pero un diseñador debe ser un artista”. Creo que es cierta y me gusta la posibilidad de combinar disciplinas artísticas visuales contemporáneas.
¿Puedes decirnos algunos artistas que admires o que te haya influido?
Como artistas contemporáneos admiro a David Shrigley, Andrew Groves, Deth P Sun, Talita Hoffmann, Tatsuro Kiyuchi, Ricardo Cavolo… y una larga lista.
¿Alguna obra que te inspire especialmente?
Las fotografías atmosféricas.
¿Alguien a quien te gustaría añadirle un pattern sobre la cabeza?
¡Hah, que pregunta más interesante! Depende del pattern y el objetivo. Puede ser bonito o provocativo.
¿Conocías al recientemente fallecido Antoni Tàpies?
No, desafortunadamente no conozco nada sobre él.
Un sueño profesional…
Sueño con viajar alrededor del mundo con la ayuda de mi trabajo. Creo que es una combinación ideal.
¿Qué puedes contarnos sobre tus proyectos de futuro?
Vamos a publicar nuestro primer fanzine pronto. Se llamará Skogen. El tema será el bosque y también habrá un feature muy especial que ahora mismo es un secreto.
Tell us about the pattern of the month you have designed for lamono. What’s its name?
I call it Windfalls. There is something anyone can find in the forest.
What were you inspired by to design it? What did you want to express with it? Any secret meaning?
I always get inspiration from nature, and this pattern is not an exception. It’s all about it, the secret magic of simple objects, which is revealed for those with gazer eyes.
You are part of Orka Collective. Can you present the collective? How it was born? What do you do?
I started working together with my friend Abo as Orka Collective in 2010. We knew each other on Internet (we live in different countries). We both love art and we decided to make a collaborative artwork. That was the beginning. Now we do graphic, textile and web design, illustrations, street art and participate in different art projects.
How would you define your style, your artwork? Any fetish or sign that must be always on your creations?
I love both detailed graphics and simple shaped minimalism, that’s why I try different styles and techniques -from line drawing or acrylic painting to vector graphic-. But almost every artwork has a connection with nature and mystery. Animals, crystals and moss are themes I often use in my works.
How do St. Petersbrug and the russian culture have influenced in your artwork?
I suppose the northern and seaside nature of my city have deeply influenced me. St Petersburg is situated near the Gulf of Finland and is surrounded by pine forests. I think that’s the reason why I love northern nature so much.
What about the russian street artist scene?
Unfortunately it’s rather poor. There’re some really talented guys and I suppose our street art scene is growing… Well, I hope so. But our urban art scene is on the lower level than, let’s say, in Europe. I suppose the reason is that it’s really difficult to get the permission to make legal street artwork in Russia. And “illegal” often means low quality, it’s logical because you have to work as fast as you can…
You are specialized on graphic and web design, illustration and branding. In the current art world, which do you think is the relationship between design and illustration?
The connection between any graphic discipline is really strong. I’m interested both in art and design. There’s an expression: “An artist can not be a designer. But a designer must be an artist”. I think it’s true, and I like to combine disciplines from contemporary visual arts.
Can you tell us some artists you admire or you are influenced by?
As to contemporary artists I admire David Shrigley, Andrew Groves, Deth P Sun, Talita Hoffmann, Tatsuro Kiyuchi, Ricardo Cavolo… and a very long list.

Hah, such an interesting question! Depends on the pattern and the goal. It can be either beautiful or provocative.
Did you know the recently deceased artist Antoni Tàpies?
No, unfortunately I don’t know anything about him.
A professional dream…
I dream of traveling the world with the help of my job. I think it’s an ideal combination.
What can you tell us about your upcoming projects?
We’re going to publish our first zine soon. It is called Skogen. The theme is forest and there will also be a special feature which is now a secret.
